ECG heart trace.

Your heart works for you every day, often without you giving it a second thought. Even so, there may be reason to gain more insight into how your heart functions.

For example when you experience palpitations or other symptoms, do intensive exercise, use certain medication, undergo a treatment that can affect your heart, or when other health measurements show that additional monitoring is useful.

Greater insight into your heart health

Even without clear symptoms, an ECG heart trace can in some situations provide valuable additional information, for example as part of a broader preventive health check.
With an ECG (electrocardiogram), we measure the electrical activity of your heart. The procedure is quick, painless and non-invasive, and provides information on your heart rhythm, heart rate and the electrical conduction through the heart, among other things.

At IKARIA Clinics, an ECG can be part of a broader health check or medical supervision. In doing so, we look not just at a single measurement, but at your health as a whole.

Who is an ECG heart trace suitable for?

An ECG heart scan can be useful when you are experiencing symptoms, but also when there is reason from your health, medication, treatment or risk profile to monitor your heart more closely.
An ECG heart trace can be used, for example:
In the case of palpitations or the feeling that your heart is beating irregularly
In the event of a remarkably high or low heart rate;
as part of medical monitoring during a treatment pathway;
As part of medical monitoring during a treatment pathway;
When using certain medication where monitoring of the heart rhythm or electrical conduction may be relevant; when our medical team advises additional monitoring based on your medical history, blood tests, blood pressure, medication or other health data;
As an additional measurement within a broader preventive health check.

An ECG is a snapshot in time,
but can provide a lot of information

A resting ECG records the electrical activity of your heart over a short period. As a result, abnormalities that occur only occasionally may be missed during the measurement. A normal result therefore does not automatically mean that every heart condition can be ruled out. At the same time, an ECG can provide important information at the time of the measurement. For example, we can assess:

– Whether the heart rhythm is regular;
– How fast the heart beats; where the heart rhythm originates;
– How the electrical impulse is conducted through the heart;
– Whether there is any evidence of specific rhythm or conduction disorders;
– Whether patterns are visible that give cause for further investigation.

This means an ECG can also provide valuable information about how the heart is functioning, even as a snapshot. When symptoms occur only occasionally, additional investigation such as longer-term heart rhythm monitoring may be necessary. If there is a reason to do so, we will discuss this with you and refer you on if required.

What can you expect from an ECG?

During the examination, small electrodes are placed on your chest and limbs. These record the electrical signals of your heart for a short time.

This will give us information about, amongst other things:
Your heart rate
your heart rate
the electrical conduction through the heart
Any anomalies that may give rise to further investigation.

Our process

Our approach in three simple steps.

1.

We are discussing why you want or need an ECG

We will start with you. Do you have any symptoms? Are you taking any medication? Do you do intense exercise? Or is the ECG being done as part of a broader treatment or preventive pathway?
This is how we always assess the result within the correct context.

2.

IKARIA Clinics performs the ECG heart trace

You lie relaxed while the electrodes are attached and the electrical activity of your heart is recorded. No current goes into your body: the equipment only measures the signals your heart produces itself.

3.

Assessment and personal advice

The results are medically reviewed. We will discuss what we see and what this means for you. Is there anything that needs further investigation? Then we will be clear about that and advise which follow-up step is appropriate. If there is no reason for additional investigation, the ECG provides valuable information for your further care.

What is included in an ECG at IKARIA Clinics?

For us, health isn't about doing as many tests as possible. It's about gathering the right information when it's relevant to your situation. That's why we combine an ECG where necessary with other information, such as:
– Your medical history;
– Current complaints;
– Medication and supplement use;
– Blood pressure and other measurements;
– Comprehensive blood test;
– Lifestyle, exercise and sport;
– Any hormonal treatment.
This creates a more complete picture of your health.

What is included?
Depending on the chosen consultation or pathway, the examination may consist of:
Discussion of your medical situation; resting ECG; medical assessment of the ECG
Explanation of the results
Personal follow-up advice
Any referral for further investigation when necessary

Frequently asked questions about our ECG heart trace

Does an ECG hurt?

No. An ECG is non-invasive and painless. The electrodes are placed on the skin and simply record the electrical activity of your heart.

How long does an ECG take?

Taking the ECG usually only takes a few minutes. In addition, allow time for preparation and discussing your situation and results.

Can an ECG show that my heart is completely healthy?

No. An ECG heart trace provides important information about, among other things, heart rhythm, heart rate, and electrical conduction, but it remains a snapshot in time. Some abnormalities are continuously present and can therefore be clearly seen on a resting ECG, while others only occur intermittently. A normal result therefore cannot rule out every heart condition. If your symptoms or results give cause for further investigation, we will discuss that with you.

Can an ECG be part of my health check?

Yes. When appropriate for your health situation or risk profile, an ECG can be combined with blood tests and other health measurements. This allows us to look more broadly than just a single result.
