Hormonal imbalance symptoms

Hormonal imbalance symptoms

Hormonal imbalance occurs when the natural relationship between hormones is disrupted. Hormones affect almost every aspect of your health, from your energy level and sleep to mood, weight and fertility. When this balance shifts, you may experience symptoms that are often difficult to place, such as fatigue, mood swings, low libido or difficulty concentrating.

Many people notice that “something is wrong” but cannot pinpoint the cause directly. This page helps you understand what hormonal imbalance is, what symptoms are associated with it, which hormones are most involved and what you can do to restore balance

What is hormonal imbalance?

Hormonal imbalance occurs when the amount of one or more hormones in the body is too high or too low. Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate numerous processes, such as energy levels, mood, digestion, sleep and fertility. Even small fluctuations can affect how you feel and function. Both women and men can suffer from hormonal imbalances, but in women, oestrogen, progesterone and thyroid hormones play a major role.

In men, testosterone and cortisol are more often involved. Symptoms often develop gradually, think fatigue, irritability or weight gain, so they are not always immediately recognised as hormonal

Main hormones in women.

In women, five hormones affect hormonal balance the most: oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol and the thyroid hormones (T3 and T4).

Oestrogen Regulates the menstrual cycle, mucous membrane formation and affects mood and fat distribution. Progesterone works calming, supports healthy sleep and prepares the body for a possible pregnancy. Testosterone, although present in lower amounts than in men, is crucial for muscle building, concentration and a healthy libido. Cortisol, the so-called stress hormone, helps with energy supply but can become dysregulated in chronic stress. Finally, thyroid hormones for stable metabolism, temperature and energy levels.

When one or more of these hormones become unbalanced, it can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, mood swings, weight gain or cycle problems, also known as hormonal imbalance

General hormonal imbalance symptoms

The symptoms of hormonal imbalance vary greatly from person to person, as each hormone has its own function and influence. Nevertheless, there are some symptoms that are common. Many people experience persistent fatigue, even after sufficient sleep. Mood swings, irritability or gloominess also occur regularly, as do libido loss, concentration problems and weight gain, especially around the abdomen. Other common signs are sleep problems, cold hands or feet, hair loss and a feeling of mental fog (“brain fog”).

These symptoms often appear gradually, so they are easily attributed to stress or age. Lifestyle factors such as poor diet, chronic stress, too little exercise or hormonal changes during menopause can intensify symptoms. Medical blood tests can help identify exactly which hormones are out of balance

Low testosterone in women

Testosterone levels that are too low are more common than many women think. Testosterone supports energy, muscle mass, concentration and a healthy libido. A deficiency can manifest as fatigue, decreased motivation, mood swings and loss of muscle strength. Skin and bone density can also suffer. The decline often occurs due to natural ageing, menopause or prolonged stress, which inhibits production in the ovaries.

Lifestyle factors play an important role: adequate sleep, strength training and a high-protein diet help support natural production. In some cases, a doctor may consider hormone supplementation, but this is always done after careful blood tests

Estrogen too high (oestrogen dominance)

When the balance between oestrogen and progesterone is disturbed, we speak of oestrogen dominance. This does not always mean that oestrogen is too high, but that progesterone is too low in proportion. Typical symptoms are bloating, weight gain, sensitive breasts, mood swings, headaches or heavy periods.

Factors such as obesity, stress, liver burden and exposure to xenoestrogens (synthetic substances in cosmetics or plastics) can contribute to this balance. Improving liver function through healthy diet, regular exercise and stress management helps normalise oestrogen levels. Sometimes medical counselling may be needed to restore hormonal balance

Schild gland problems

The thyroid plays a central role in metabolism and energy regulation. When the gland works too slowly (hypothyroidism), symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin and hair loss often arise. An overly fast thyroid (hyperthyroidism) actually causes palpitations, weight loss and nervousness.

Women, especially over 40 or after pregnancy, are at increased risk of thyroid disorders. Autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto or Graves are common causes. Treatment is always under the supervision of a doctor and aims to restore stable hormone levels, often with medication and lifestyle advice

Stress hormones (cortisol)

Cortisol is an essential stress hormone that helps the body respond to tension. During short periods, this is useful: it increases alertness and energy. However, when stress becomes chronic, cortisol remains high for long periods, which can lead to fatigue, weight gain (especially around the abdomen), insomnia and reduced immunity.

Long-term elevated cortisol levels can also disrupt the balance of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Therefore, stress management is essential for hormonal health. Regular relaxation, breathing exercises, strength training and sufficient sleep are effective ways to lower cortisol. A balanced diet with sufficient protein and healthy fats also supports hormonal stability
