Testosterone Optimisation

The male hormone testosterone plays an important role in various body functions. As you age, testosterone levels gradually decrease, which is normal. However, it can become a problem if you experience symptoms such as less energy, weight gain, poor sleep and/or reduced libido.

Adequate testosterone levels are essential to feel energetic. A testosterone deficiency can have a significant impact on your well-being and health. The deficiency can be treated by administering testosterone, also known as testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). This can be done in various forms, such as with gels, injections or capsules. Sometimes, different treatments are combined to achieve the optimal result.

Function of testosterone

Testosterone is a male sex hormone; it is primarily produced in the testes (testicles), and only 5 to 10 per cent comes from the adrenal glands. This hormone is important for the production of sperm, and it contributes to the development of male characteristics. Testosterone is closely involved in fat regulation and storage, blood sugar and blood pressure management, stimulation of bone marrow production, and maintaining bone strength.

Additionally, the hormone has a marked influence on maintaining secondary sexual characteristics such as beard growth and muscles. And it affects erection quality, prostate function and sperm production. Testosterone is essential for libido (sexual desire). Finally, it may play a role in (preventing) depression.

Testosterone treatment, risks and contraindications

Generally, testosterone treatment by gel or injection poses no risk for the (new) development of prostate cancer, nor does it worsen mild urinary issues. However, it is not recommended to administer the hormone to men who already have prostate cancer, men with severe urinary complaints and men who still desire to have children. We also advise against treatment in men with severe heart problems. The use of testosterone supplementation sometimes leads to hair loss and juvenile pimples on the face in the beginning. Regular blood checks are needed to measure testosterone levels, blood thickness and PSA (a marker for prostate health)
